Formed from the prairie and nestled in the shadow of the
Wichita Mountains, Lawton reigns as the crown jewel of
southwest Oklahoma.
Lawton was born August 6, 1901, when the
Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Indian Reservation lands were opened to
settlement by the federal government.
Prairie Dogs, the unofficial mascot of the city symbolizes
the frontier spirit of family. Ranked as the nations
more ethnically diversified city, Lawton is home to peoples
the world over.

| In 1991,
Money magazine ranked Lawton as the 28th best community in
which to live. The Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra
presents eight performances each year. Lawton Community
Theatre has a minimum of 4 live performances per year. The city of Lawton has 76 public parks,
tennis courts, golf courses and 2 lakes. |

60,000-acre Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge located 20 miles
Northwest of Lawton provides outdoor recreation, including
water activities, hiking, climbing, camping and picnicking.
Large herds of buffalo and Texas longhorn cattle along with
various other animals may be seen on a visit there. |

| Fort Sill was established as a cavalry fort January 8,
1869. The post has been the home of the U. S. Army Field
Artillery and is presently the headquarters of the Army's
Field Artillery Center and School. |
